Room: A 213, A 214

Product stewards in multinational companies are presented with unique challenges while managing compliance with the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and other regulations, such as California Proposition 65. These challenges include understanding differences between regulatory schemes across geographic regions, clearly defining division and assignment of compliance responsibilities, managing confidential business information, encouraging knowledge sharing by suppliers and within the company, and managing parts of the supply chain located outside the United States.

Such challenges can be more difficult for multinational companies that are not traditional chemical manufacturers and who therefore may lack chemical regulatory experience, knowledge, and available resources. The presenter provides examples of challenges faced by such companies and offers practical approaches for building, maintaining, and auditing compliance management systems.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session:
1. Understand challenges faced by product stewards in multinational companies with multi-layered and globally-scattered supply chains
2. Analyze how these challenges are impacting companies outside the chemical sector
3. Evaluate how product stewards in these companies are successfully developing effective compliance management systems for managing regulatory compliance and changes to existing products, as well as supporting the development of new products
4. Summarize the importance of internal- and third-party compliance management system audits for identifying potential violations and systems gaps
