The presentation will be divided into four parts:
1) A detailed description of the CCSS three-part model of text complexity, including comparisons to other measures and an examination of examples from the CCSS appendices;
2) A brief review of the evidence supporting the strong relationship between vocabulary knowledge, text comprehension, and academic achievement;
3) An overview of the CCSS vocabulary standards and how they connect to understanding complex texts;
4) A demonstration of several vocabulary activities that address CCSS vocabulary standards and are also effective in teaching the literate/academic vocabulary needed to understand specific complex texts.
